Kansas...Myths & Facts

There's a lot of jokes about our little state but it's a pretty interesting place to live. Where else in the world could you live that you can experience all four seasons in a single day? LOL It's no joke our weather can be more than a little crazed. You can wake up to snow and be wanting a pair of shorts by lunch. Our summers go well over 100 degrees and our winters below zero. I've been all over the US, my father was a truck driver and many times I went with him when I was very young but no matter how pretty the scenery was I always wanted to get back to Kansas. As an adult it's been the same. I've travelled and admit many parts of the world are simply breathtaking but I'm always looking forward to getting home to Kansas.

One of the most common jokes I hear when people find out I'm from Kansas is "How's Dorothy and Toto?". LOL I grew up loving that movie and still do, many days however I've wished they'd picked another state. Then again Kansas is the heart of "Tornado Alley" so what better place to use? And yes, I've seen many tornadoes in person, they're frightening but at the same time you can't help but be in awe of the power. Even a "small" one can wreak amazing destruction.

One of my favorite things about Kansas is simply the nature. We've still got miles of prairie and forests and there's wildlife everywhere. Deer, raccoons, rabbits, opossums, prairie dogs, and many more are all common place and seen often. Many times I've woken to them wandering around in the yard. There are still protected places you can even get to see buffalo grazing. Someone once told me the best way to see Kansas was to drive through or fly over in the dark, after all it's just a big flat grassland right? Very untrue, Kansas is miles of rolling hills and the prairie lands are some of the most beautiful anywhere.

I am not a big fan of sports but in the last 10 years or so "Wildcat Fever" has hit the area and even I find myself routing for the KSU Wildcats. I went to college at KSU and remember their sports teams being the laughing stock of the "Big 8" so it's nice to see them doing well now days and being able to take pride in KSU.
